He hurried toward the gym and stopped short just before reaching it. He turned and stared at Vicki for a moment. The look on his face wasn’t what she expected. His mouth and eyes were opened wide. He looked like he was in shock.

When the workday finally ended, after superficial chitchat with their comrades during dinner in the mess and afterward in the crew bar, Miklos walked Vicki to her door. He had decided that they should turn in early and be on time for work the next day.

He tried to suppress his sadness, but it was difficult. If only they could whisper to each other in bed holding each other close until they fell asleep, and then wake in each other’s arms. It would make so many things easier--not just sex. A real conversation. Like the one he had to have with her soon. He didn’t want her smile to disappear, but he had to address those niggling concerns about the way she spoke to him. There might never be a better moment.

“Vicki, I must ask you something.”

“Of course. What is it?”

“I know that last evening, when we were intimate, you had to shout above the engines, but I hope you won’t shout at me or give me orders in bed when it isn’t necessary.”

“What? I didn’t give you orders.”

“Yes, my love. You did. You shouted, ‘Lick me,’ and you told me to stick my fingers inside you.”

Vicky’s mouth fell open. She stared at him as if he had accused her of yelling “fire” in a crowded theatre. “I did not. I may have been thinking those things, but I never said them out loud. You did those things on your own.”

“You should not lie to me, Vicki. I am your husband. I will not hurt you. All I ask is that you tell me the truth.”

She pursed her lips and began opening her door.

“It seems my bloody husband is calling me a liar--and I’m not!” Her voice rose in anger.

“Shhh, my love. Someone will hear us.”

She turned her head and glared at him. “Hear us what?”

“You were talking in an angry tone of voice. And, I wish you wouldn’t call me your ‘bloody’ husband, my love. It sounds as if you hate me.”

Vicki jumped away from him, and her eyes grew huge. “Miklos. I never called you my bloody husband. I thought it in my head. But I never said it out loud.”

He didn’t know what to think. First telling off their boss--which she wouldn’t have done and Gizela wouldn’t have stood for--and now... Didn’t she know when she was speaking? Or was he reading her mind?”

As he stared at her, he heard her voice say, “Bloody hell!” He was looking right at her lips and they hadn’t moved. This time it was Miklos who took a step back.

“I--I think we are both very tired.”

She nodded. “Too right.” She put her key card in the door, but before she opened it, she launched herself at this neck and whispered, “I don’t know what happened, but I love you and I’d never lie to you.
